Boardroom Socks Men’s Merino Wool Midcalf Dress Socks

We’ve all kicked our shoes off at the end of a long day only to be greeted by sad, soggy socks hanging off the ends of our feet. Much like with shoes, not every sock choice is created equal, and with summer in full swing, it’s more essential than ever to have a good pair (or several pairs) of moisture-wicking socks on hand to help keep your feet feeling fresh all day long.

The best moisture-wicking socks will keep your feet dry and reduce friction across all areas of your feet. To help you find styles with functional cuts, high-performance materials and a good amount of aesthetic fashion appeal, we consulted stylists and podiatrists to get their recommendations for the best moisture-wicking socks that will keep sweaty feet from ruining any summer moment.

Best no-show moisture-wicking socks

Bombas All Sport Cushioned No-Show Socks

Bombas Women’s All Sport Cushioned No-Show Socks, 4-Pack

The summer season often means more walks outside to enjoy the weather, and no-show socks are a great option for creating a seamless silhouette while wearing your everyday sneakers. Bombas socks are some of our editors’ favorites for several reasons: their high-performing fabric, softness and long-lasting durability, just to name a few. I’m personally a fan of the silicone strips that help prevent these no-show socks from slipping off your feet.

Bombas Men's All Sport Cushioned No-Show Socks, 4-Pack

Personal stylist and founder of A Sharp Dressed Man Jennifer Lund-Mahoney also recommends this Bombas style. Lund-Mahoney likes that, in addition to being made with a moisture-wicking polyester and cotton yarn, these socks have subtly cushioned soles for increased comfort. Made to help you tackle everything from tough workouts to daily errands, these socks come in three sizes, so you can dial in the fit that works best for your feet.

Feetures Elite Light Cushion Invisible Socks

I was introduced to these Feetures socks when I tested several no-show styles for our guide last year. Since then, they have become some of my most-reached-for socks. Board-certified podiatrist Dr. Nasim Kalhor also recommended these socks, noting that they offer excellent moisture management, making them a great choice for anyone who spends long hours standing or exercising. They mold to my feet incredibly well, reducing bunching and delivering a second-skin feel that holds tight throughout the day. As a naturally sweaty person, I love that these socks never fail to keep my feet feeling dry and comfortable, which is why I grab them for both long runs and everyday wear.

Ondo No-Show Cotton Socks

Though you might not be reaching for no-show socks on the daily, Turner Allen, the founder and lead stylist at Style Turner, said they can be worthy of a place in your closet since they work well with lower-cut shoe styles. Allen likes this Ondo pair, which will stay firmly in place on your feet thanks to the ample toe covering and nonslip grips at the socks’ opening. Though this pair is made from organic cotton — which is not known for being highly sweat-wicking on its own — Allen said it also uses a proprietary AeroLight fabric that helps absorb and evaporate moisture before you even notice you're sweating.

Darn Tough Limited-Edition Run No-Show Tab Socks, 2-Pack

If you need socks equipped to tackle walks, runs and hikes that are still comfortable enough for everyday wear, podiatric physician Dr. Meaghan Wood said these Darn Tough socks are her top recommendation. “Their blend of merino wool, nylon and Lycra provides excellent moisture management while adding durability, stretch and a secure fit,” Wood said. We’re also big fans of Darn Tough’s socks — they even earned top billing as our best-tested hiking socks — and they’ve proven to be durable and versatile for an array of activities. Not to mention, the brand has an unmatched lifetime warranty on all its socks.

Smartwool Everyday No-Show Socks

Smartwool makes an array of basics — from shorts and tees to socks and underwear — all crafted from merino wool blends. On top of being incredibly light and soft on my feet, these no-show socks are some of the best at keeping my feet dry. I regularly wear them with casual and athletic sneakers to help reduce friction and sweaty odors during long days on my feet. Plus, the reinforced edges at the openings help provide a secure fit that fights against sliding.

Balega Hidden Comfort No-Show Socks

Kalhor said these Balega socks are among her favorite moisture-wicking options, as they do an excellent job keeping the feet dry while providing soft cushioning with each step. They even include extra padding over the top of the toes to keep your feet more protected during high-impact activities like running. “They are comfortable enough for long workdays and are also an excellent option for walking, exercising or traveling,” Kalhor said.

Best ankle and crew moisture-wicking socks

Bombas Performance Compression Ankle Socks

Breathable enough to slip on for even the hottest runs, these Bombas socks won us over when we tested them for our best compression running socks guide. CNN Underscored health and fitness editor Summer Cartwright praised their supreme comfort and smooth seamless toes that kept her feet free from blisters. Cartwright added that these socks worked well for jogs, speed sessions, long runs and cross-training endeavors like cycling and strength training, keeping her feet dry no matter what terrain she set out on. The socks themselves are crafted from breathable yarn and have additional mesh ventilation panels that increase airflow to the feet, preventing moisture from getting trapped. They’re also surprisingly durable, with Cartwright noting that her pairs have been holding strong for three years now.

Icebeakers Merino Lifestyle Light Crew Socks

Icebreaker Women's Merino Lifestyle Light Crew Socks

Wool socks might not sound like the most obvious choice for summer wear, but Allen points out that merino wool is a naturally moisture-wicking material that can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture before feeling wet to the touch. “Blend it with technical performance fibers, and you've got socks that not only stay dry throughout the day but also have a subtle cool-to-the-touch feel,” Allen said. Case in point: these Icebreakers crew socks, which use merino wool, nylon and Lycra to create a stretchy and soft style you can wear through any season.

Made for everyday wear, these socks have reinforced heels and toes for extra durability where you need it most. Plus, supports through the Achilles tendon and arches ensure that the socks stay in place, with no baggy fabric bunching or bothering you.

Mr. Davis Performance Dress Socks

If you work in a more formal or even business casual environment, Lund-Mahoney said these Mr. Davis socks are a good option for pairing with any sort of dress pants. In addition to their moisture-wicking performance fabric, Lund-Mahoney likes that these socks have built-in arch support, cushioned soles and a design that stays in place on the ankles — all of which make this style one of her go-to choices.

Figs Unisex Compression Socks

Figs is a brand you might commonly see worn by healthcare professionals, as it's known for making flattering scrub sets and stylish work gear. However, podiatric physician Dr. Regan Bond said these compression socks from the brand are also worth checking out. While they’re not technically marketed as moisture-wicking, these socks are made with a nylon and elastane material that Bond said does a great job keeping feet dry and supported. Plus, you’ll get the added benefit of 360-degree compression from these socks, which can help ease aches in the feet and legs.

Boardroom Socks Men’s Merino Wool Midcalf Dress Socks

Personal stylist and founder of Pivot Image Consulting, Patrick Kenger called out Boardroom’s socks as a good choice for occasions when you might need a more polished or formal look but don’t want a thick or bulky style. Made from a merino wool and nylon-blend fabric, these socks come in over-the-calf, midcalf and no-show cuts, so you can find the one that suits your needs best. These socks are manufactured in North Carolina and come in a range of solid colors and designs, which Lund-Mahoney (who also recommends the brand) said are nice enough to sport with sophisticated looks or match with basic pant styles.

Bombas UltraLite Sport Merino Wool Blend Ankle Socks

Bombas Women’s UltraLite Sport Merino Wool Blend Ankle Socks

“These are a great option for someone looking for a moisture-wicking sock that’s comfortable enough for everyday wear while still performing well during walks, workouts or travel,” Wood said. This style will peek out a little bit over the top of your sneakers, but the added tabs on the front and back of the socks help prevent blisters without adding excess bulk around the feet.

Wood added that the merino wool-blend fabric of these socks helps regulate temperature, manage moisture and control odor, which can be especially helpful during the summer months. You can grab this style in single pairs, three-pack or six-pack options for whatever kind of restocking your sock drawer might need.

Balega Blister-Resist Quarter Socks

These Balega quarter socks land a bit higher above the ankle and have maximum cushioning, making them fitting for running and other active movements. A favorite of Kenger’s, these socks have a blend of natural mohair fibers and quick-drying performance materials that wick moisture away. As an added bonus, this style features integrated mesh panels that help further improve breathability and keep feet dry all day.

Comme Si Merino Wool Socks

In addition to its moisture-wicking properties, merino wool also has a luxe, soft and lightweight feel that Adams said makes it a good choice for all-season wear. She likes these Comme Si socks, which are made of a merino wool and nylon blend that can be styled loose for a slouchy look or pulled tight for more polish. Though Adams normally leans towards low-contrast trouser socks — meaning the pair is similar in tone or color to the shoes or pants — a bright color, like this crimson red shade, can bring a pop of personality to your sneakers, close-toed sandals or loafers.

The North Face Mountain Hiking Crew Socks

A good pair of hiking socks can be the difference between a perfect day on the trail and a trek peppered with frequent stops. Wood said these socks from The North Face are a good pick for keeping you moving in comfort. They combine merino wool with synthetic fibers to create a moisture-wicking option that’s well suited for hiking and other outdoor activities. “I like that they’re available in several lengths and provide a little extra cushioning without feeling overly bulky,” Wood said.

New Balance Women’s Active Premium Ruffle Socks

“I love New Balance socks for running, so when I saw the brand introduce this frilly pair to its lineup, I was excited to try them out for everyday activities,” Cartwright said, adding that the quick-drying fabric in these socks keeps her feet from feeling sweaty and prevents any annoying blisters from bubbling up after hours of summertime wear. Plus, the textured tops add a subtle but stylish detail that helps decorate the ankles.

Jungmaven Town and Country Ankle Socks

Made of organic hemp, which is naturally moisture-wicking, these lightweight socks offer breathability, structure and stretch, according to Adams. If you’re a little nervous about attempting to style a tall sock, Adams said this quarter-length option with a cheerful stripe is the perfect way to (literally) dip your toe into a taller style. “I generally only wear sporty socks with sneakers, but these would also pair well with a more structured leather shoe or chunky sandal,” Adams said.

What to look for in moisture-wicking socks

Even though we might reach for them less in the summer months, socks are an essential in every season. A great pair of moisture-wicking socks can prevent blisters and combat sweaty, smelly feet on sweltering days. They’re also especially important if you’re doing a lot of walking or standing on your feet for long periods. Before you grab the first pair of moisture-wicking socks you see, here are a few things our experts said you should take note of:

Materials

Moisture-wicking fabrics are designed to pull sweat away from the feet, leaving the skin feeling drier and more comfortable, according to Kalhor. Natural materials like merino wool and bamboo tend to be popular choices for moisture-wicking socks due to their inherent ability to manage moisture and regulate temperature. However, not all natural materials wick away sweat the same. Fully cotton socks, for instance, tend to retain moisture, making the feet feel damp and trapping odor, according to Lund-Mahoney. Other good materials for moisture-wicking socks include synthetic performance fabricslike polyester, nylon and polypropylene.

Beyond the fabric itself, Wood said a few additional features can make a big difference in keeping your feet comfortable. “A sock that fits well and stays in place is important because bunching can create pressure points and increase friction,” she said. “Seamless toe construction can help minimize rubbing, especially for anyone looking to reduce friction and protect the skin. Depending on your activity level, extra cushioning in the heel and forefoot can also provide additional comfort during long days of standing, walking or exercising.”

Height and cut

Warm weather doesn’t completely eliminate the need for socks, according to Allen, but it does change what kind you should reach for. “Anytime you’re wearing closed-toe shoes, such as loafers or sneakers, a lightweight, breathable sock will undoubtedly keep you more comfortable,” Allen said.

For men’s styles, more formal events like summer weddings or work outings might call for dressier sock options, such as polished crew socks or over-the-calf socks. “Look for a sock where the main color matches the pant in order to ensure that the eye moves from the pant right into the shoe,” Jennifer said. “Another good thing to consider is to choose a sock that stays up on the calf and is not too short. This will avoid any part of the leg showing when seated.” On the other hand, if you’re opting for low-cut loafers or boat shoes, Kenger said no-show socks can offer an extra layer of protection from blisters and friction.

Color and print

Instead of viewing socks as purely functional, Allen said you can think of them as another component of your overall look. “Especially when the temperature makes layering impossible, a pair of socks in an interesting color, pattern or texture can add visual interest without requiring more clothes,” Allen said.

Consider socks with colors, textures or prints that contrast what you’re wearing. Adams said that juxtaposing your socks with the rest of your outfit can be an effective styling tool, helping to change the vibe of an entire look. You can also choose color-coordinating socks to create a seamless head-to-toe ensemble. “I try to avoid particularly loud socks with too many patterns, instead opting for something more minimal that mirrors the color of another part of the outfit,” Kenger said.

FAQs

Do moisture-wicking socks really work?

Yes, moisture-wicking socks keep feet drier. Wood said that unlike socks that absorb sweat and stay damp, moisture-wicking socks are designed to pull moisture away from the skin so it can evaporate more efficiently. Moisture-wicking socks can also help reduce friction and improve overall comfort throughout the day.

What are the best socks to wear during a hot, humid summer?

Socks made of moisture-wicking materials are a good choice for hot and humid summer days as they help keep the feet dry and comfortable. Wood recommends looking for socks made of materials such as merino wool or performance synthetic blends like polyester and nylon. Fully cotton socks, on the other hand, tend to retain moisture, which Wood said can leave feet damp for longer periods.

During the summer, you might spend more time walking, hiking, traveling or exercising outdoors. While it’s important to pick supportive, closed-toe shoes for these activities, Wood said these shoe styles can also create warm, enclosed environments where sweat easily accumulates. “When sweat remains trapped against the skin, it can contribute to a variety of common foot issues,” Wood said. “Warm, damp feet are more prone to fungal and bacterial infections, while prolonged [exposure to] moisture also softens the skin, making it more vulnerable to blisters and irritation from friction.” Socks made with moisture-wicking material can help keep feet drier during the hotter months, which can reduce the occurrence of these issues popping up.

Kalhor added that proper foot hygiene is also important to keep up with during the summer months. “I always remind my patients to change their socks every day and even more often if they exercise or their feet become sweaty,” she said.

How do you wash moisture-wicking socks?

Moisture-wicking socks can be washed much like any other socks, but the specific care may vary depending on the material. For instance, Boardroom recommends washing its socks inside-out in cold water and hanging them to dry. If you don’t want to hang dry the socks, you can throw them in the dryer on a low heat setting. Bombas also recommends washing its socks in cold water and tumble drying them on a low heat setting. Ahead of washing your socks, be sure to double-check the care instructions. Washing your socks correctly will ensure that they retain their fit and performance quality over time.
