Trump Considers Expanding Military Actions in Iran

According to two sources familiar with the situation, President Donald Trump has been reviewing various options for broadening the military operation in Iran. This was a key topic during a Tuesday Situation Room meeting, which focused on strategies to weaken Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump has openly stated his intent to intensify strikes against Iran in the coming week, specifically mentioning potential attacks on civilian infrastructure and energy facilities. Concurrently, he has been quietly exploring different scenarios for subsequent military actions with top officials. The goal is to discover methods that will compel Iran to yield to US demands, given that current strategies have proven ineffective in subjugating Tehran.

Over the last five days, the US has executed daily assaults on Iranian outposts along the Strait of Hormuz. This included a Wednesday strike on the small Greater Tunb Island within the strait, a location utilized as an Iranian military base.

Officials indicated that these strikes aim to cripple Iran’s capacity to block commercial shipping through this vital waterway. Furthermore, the destruction of assets such as radar systems and missile launchers could prepare the battlefield for the more extensive US military campaigns that Trump is currently considering.

According to the two officials, the President is presently evaluating a plan to capture Kharg Island, Iran’s primary export center, and to bomb subterranean facilities at Pickaxe Mountain, which are suspected of housing Iranian nuclear activities.

Trump confirmed his focus on these two targets in recent interviews, although he hinted that the ground assault on Kharg Island might be delegated to an allied nation.

“We have other people that will do the ground campaign for us,” he remarked during a Fox News appearance, declining to provide further details.

In the past, Trump has given both public and private signals of his readiness to escalate conflicts, only to retreat later. However, his frustration is mounting over Iran’s refusal to surrender to his nuclear ultimatums and its ongoing interference with maritime traffic in the strait.

The President has wavered between expressing skepticism about Iran’s desire to negotiate and asserting that Tehran is eager to return to diplomatic talks.

“They want to settle so badly. They don’t like what we’re doing, and they do want to settle. We’ll find out whether or not we settle with them, or we just finish it off,” he declared on Wednesday at a defense industry gathering in Pennsylvania.

Just a week prior, Trump presented a contrasting perspective, declaring that further dialogue with Iran was a “waste of time.”

During a lengthy, three-hour interview with Joe Rogan on Tuesday, Vice President JD Vance, who serves as the administration’s primary negotiator with Iran, cautioned that military force alone would not secure victory.

“You can bomb them, you can take away their radar, you can take away some of their drones and some of their missiles, but it’s just too easy to fire at ships in the straits,” Vance noted. “So you’ve got to actually be willing to talk and to try to figure out the problem.”
